Many cultural studies suggest that bánh tét is the product of cultural integration between Vietnamese culture and Chăm’s one (following lingaism).

“Tét” is pronounced similarly to “Tết”, so it is speculated that the current term was a case of mispronunciation from the original “bánh Tết”. Another theory suggests that “tét” refers to the cutting method before eating (normally using the wrapping strings to split/“tét”), hence the name “bánh tét”.
