On December 23 (lunar month), Vietnamese people traditionally erect cây nêu (Tết pole). Legend has it that from this day when the Kitchen God reports to Heaven to New Year’s Eve, evil spirits usually take advantage of the chance to disturb the peace of human life; Tết pole serves as humans’ guardian against them.

The pole is a 5 to 6-metre-high bamboo pole erected in the front yard and decorated with flags, pennons, lanterns, couplet papers, wind chimes, etc. It is then disassembled on January 7 (lunar month) or Khai hạ day, when Tết is officially over.
