“Hoàng hôn”, in Sino-Vietnamese dictionaries, means “the time when the sun begins to set, with dimming light”. In this word, “hoàng” means “yellow” and “hôn” means “early evening”.

“Chiều hoàng hôn” is a case of redundancy, since “hoàng hôn” has already encompassed “chiều” (late afternoon/early evening).

Besides, Vietnamese people also use “hoàng hôn” to refer to old age.

E.g. He has reached the dusk of his life.
