Making its appearance in Vietnam since 1533, Christmas has transformed from a religious holiday to a public one. Besides conventional celebrations like in other countries, Christmas in Saigon has its own traits, one of which is a giant star lantern hanging above the gate of religious households.

This lantern symbolizes the Bethlehem star, which guided 3 kings from the Orient to come witness the birth of Jesus and is an icon of Catholics’ guiding light. During Christmas, religious neighborhoods light up their streets and alleys with these star lanterns, creating a joyful lively atmosphere.
