Đa Kao sounds like a Western word and has been mistaken for a French location; in fact, this is purely a Vietnamese word whose current pronunciation was the result of the phonological morphing process.

Đakao was originally Đất Hộ (household land). In the old days’ newspapers and documents, French people transcribed Đất Hộ into Đakao to describe administrative units. From then, Đất Hộ became a forgotten name and only Đa Kao persists till today.
