“Hot tofu pudding!”, “Mung bean sticky rice/spinach sticky rice balls!”, “Knife and scissors sharpening!” and “Steamed rice cakes, banana pastry with coconut milk!” have been familiar sounds that can be heard on all streets and alleys in Saigon.

As society develops, merchants’ chants – a staple sound of Saigon – also change. Traditional chants have been joined by recordings to lessen hard work by merchants and help them reach a wider population. Anyhow, these chants have remained a sign of simplicity in this modern city.
