Mid-Year Festival – an Asian celebration associated with the annual weather cycle – is popular in Vietnam, South and North Korea, China, and Japan.

In Vietnam, it is also colloquially known as “Pest Exterminating Festival” because during this time of the year, people are encouraged to get rid of pests and bugs that are harmful to plants, crops and people. On that day, people prepare to honor trays with summer fruits, bánh ú tro (lye water-infused pyramid sticky rice cake), rice ball sweet soup, and sweet fermented rice balls as, firstly, tribute to the cosmos and their ancestors and, secondly, family feast, hoping for a good harvest and good health for everyone.
