April sun shines all over Saigon. Streets are lined up with national flags on both sides to celebrate the Day of Southern Liberation for National Reunification.

In long public holidays like this (spanning from April 30th to Labour Day on May 1st), many people working and studying in Saigon seize the chance to rest, return to their hometown or go on vacations. Saigon seems to be less crowded, with less traffic and fewer citizens rushing by like normal.

This, however, does not mean Saigon becomes deserted. The national flag is hung everywhere, from small alleys to long boulevards, to celebrate national reunification day. Central streets like Lê Duẩn, Nam Kỳ Khởi Nghĩa, Đồng Khởi, Lê Lợi, etc. are decorated with flags, flowers, lights and banners. Places of attraction such as Notre Dame Cathedral and Turtle Lake are frequented by young residents and foreigners taking photos.

If you haven’t planned for a holiday trip, you can visit Independence Palace, Củ Chi Tunnel, famous museums (War Remnants Museum, Hồ Chí Minh City Museum, Vietnam History Museum, Hồ Chí Minh City Museum of Fine Arts, Hồ Chí Minh Museum to name a few), or theme parks such as Đầm Sen and Suối Tiên.
