Thủ Đức Market was founded during late 17th century-early 18th century period, having existed for nearly 300 years in Saigon.

Some theories speculate that Thủ refers to the rank of a local head mandarin, and Đức was his name. The market founder, a businessman named Tạ Dương Minh (with Chinese origins), wanted to pay tribute to that mandarin, hence the market’s name: Thủ Đức.
